Game Review: Mirror’s Edge Catalyst

Recently I finished the game Mirror’s Edge Catalyst and I have to say It was a great experience.

I played the original Mirror’s Edge way back in 2012 or so and I loved the minimalist style, parkour movements and general pseudo utopian feeling of the city. I remember thinking that I wanted more of this type of game as it was just so different from anything I’ve played before.

If you fell in love with the first game like I did, you will fall in love with this one. The new Mirror’s Edge is exactly what I wanted after the original. There are some flaws and rough edges, like almost every large game, but overall it left me with the same exciting feeling with high paced movements and heart dropping leaps across an amazing city.

The visuals are magnificent. Clean and shiny, glass and metal. Everywhere you go you feel the city and the inhabitants attempt to appear perfect. The detail is beautiful and its so easy to get absorbed into the world created. There is a lot of work put into making this game feel more open compared to the previous title. There are so many paths to take between two points on a map. The one downside I found is the fact that the world is split up into multiple districts with limited paths across them. This means that you’ll inevitably converge to a few paths when traversing though long routes that cross the districts. However within each district is where the magic happens. Each district is unique in style and challenge you in different ways. Its truly a beautiful map.

The movement is very fluid and makes you believe you are right there. The tumbles make my stomach roll and the leaps make my heart jump. It feels so real. Once you get into the rhythm of the movement it feels like you are a part of the world. The fluidity of the game is much more polished compared to the first game and you can feel it instantly. The first time you do a fancy combo to reach a challenging point you will certainly feel badass!

In terms of story, it is somewhat predictable and not exactly top level storytelling. However this game was never meant to be an amazing story line, its definitely more of a fast paced action title. Thus, I am not too worried about the lack of depth in the story.

Overall, I love this game. It is beautiful, smooth to play and very fun! Definitely recommended to those who enjoy parkour styled movements and fast paced action along with amazing visuals.
